While browsing YouTube, you stumbled upon a video titled “Fallout” that doesn’t seem to relate directly to the games or TV series. Curiosity piqued, you clicked on it and found a group of people engaged in an animated discussion. You’re left wondering, “What is this all about?” In the vast sea of Fallout content, which typically includes Let’s Plays, tips and guide videos, or detailed lore explanations, there’s a unique niche that allows for new and intriguing stories within the Fallout universe. At Saga Roll, we’re exploring this niche in tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) set in the Fallout universe.

What is a Tabletop Roleplaying Game?

TTRPGs are collaborative storytelling games where a group of people gather to create and tell compelling stories. These games are unscripted and largely improvised on the spot, resulting in dynamic and unpredictable narratives. Actual play videos are recordings made while a group plays TTRPGs, allowing others to enjoy the tales spun during these sessions.

As the storyteller, my role is to guide the narrative, craft encounters, and create scenes for players to interact with. I also act as an arbitrator, making decisions about the outcomes of player’s actions and describing the consequences. The players take on the roles of their characters, much like actors in a movie, reacting to the scenes and characters presented to them. Each character has their own drives and motivations, evolving over time as the story progresses. We use dice to determine the results of actions and decisions, adding an element of chance to our storytelling.

The World of Fallout

Assuming you’re familiar with the Fallout universe, we encourage you to play the various video games, watch the recent series on Amazon Prime, or explore the multitude of videos available on YouTube. In brief, Fallout is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, more than 200 years after a nuclear exchange that decimated a world both similar to and different from our own. This wasteland is populated by dangerous mutated animals, humans, crazed robots, and a whole lot of radiation. In this chaos, tough and often eccentric people attempt to survive and, sometimes, thrive in his inhospitable land.

Our Fallout TTRPG Campaign

We use a rule system called Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, published by Modiphius Entertainment. Utilizing a combination of digital PDFs and physical rule books, our international cast meets via Discord and uses Roll20 to manage our dice rolls and character sheets.

Our game is set in Northern Kentucky, in the Commonwealth of Columbia, on the border of Indiana and the Commonwealth of the Great Lakes. The story revolves around settling a town in the remains of a long-forgotten military listening post and the encounters in the surrounding area.
